Industrial Hot Taps
What makes a hot tap considered "industrial"?

We define industrial hot taps as those conducted in-doors or in an industrial setting, such as those performed in factories, manufacturing plants and water treatment facilities.

We differentiate between these as "regular" waterworks hot taps because of differences in job-side conditions, additional training requirements and different materials considerations.

What is unique about performing industrial hot taps?

Additional training: N.S. Pawliuk workers have the required safety qualifications for virtually all job sites. This includes first aid, fall protection, H2S Alive, confined space training and other qualifications. Contact us for more details.

Job site conditions: We have a large inventory of low-clearance, lightweight equipment to help us get jobs done in tight spaces and difficult to access areas.

Materials: Industrial hot taps often require materials with additional chemical compatibility and temperature considerations. We work with several manufacturers to find the right product for the project.

When is a good choice for an industrial hot tap?
A hot tap is a good choice for when it is impractical to shut down the existing pipe or vessel but an outlet is required.

Some example applications of situations where we have performed hot taps:
-
In lift stations and water treatment plants, for the verification of shutdowns, new instrumentation to be installed.
-
In manufacturing plants, to create new connections without disturbing processes.
-
In institutional settings, such as hospitals and hotels to allow for heating system upgrades to be conducted without disrupting heading or cooling.

What are the risks of hot tapping?
Issues rarely arise during hot taps but can include leaks and lost coupons.

N.S. Pawliuk works hard to prevent issues from occurring through manufacturer-centred employee training, adherence to proper procedures, and adherence to the AWWA's best practices.

What sizes of outlets can be hot tapped?

The most common pipe materials in Canada can support outlets the same size as the existing pipe. Manufacturers make specialized tapping sleeves for this purpose. Click here to see examples of "size-on-size" taps we have completed.
Certain limitations apply. Contact us for more information.

What temperatures and pressure can be hot tapped?

N.S. Pawliuk specializes in hot taps performed on pipe containing potable water, wastewater and light industrial chemicals such as coolant, sludge and percolate.

We also regularly hot tap hot-water and heating system piping.
Because of the large amount of variables, please contact us for details.

Key Take-Aways for Industrial Hot Taps:

-
Hot taps prevent the need for a system shut down when creating new connections.
-
Hot tapping is faster than cutting in a tee.
-
N.S. Pawliuk offers a wide range of tapping fittings and valves suitable for many different types of line content, temperatures and pressures.
-
No chlorination of the line is required, no lab reports to wait on and and virtually no water is wasted.
