Concrete Cylinder Pipe Hot Taps

What is Concrete Cylinder Pipe?

Concrete cylinder pipe (CCP) is pipe which has been constructed with layer(s) of steel, wire and cement. It is typically used for larger diameter transmission mains. It is also referred to as CCP and "Hyprescon", which is a brand name.

AWWA's M9 manual is a great resource for further information. We've broken down some of the key points related to hot tapping here.

Can CCP be hot tapped safely?

Yes. Because of how tapping fittings are installed due to CCP's composite nature, certain outlet limitations apply. Please contact us for details.

Why would the choice be made to hot tap CCP?

A hot tap is a good choice when disturbing service to the surrounding area isn't an option. For example, a new branch connection to feed a subdivision is required off of an existing transmission main, but shutting down the transmission main would be inconvenient and / or costly.

I need to shut down a section of CCP for repair work, to a new valve installed or something similar to that, but I also don't want service to be impacted. How does that work?

Line stopping is a service we offer where a temporary "plug" may be inserted into an existing pipe while it is live. This service is compatible with CCP. This allows for service to be maintained up to the line stop plug. Bypass piping can also be installed for continued service around the work area, meaning that there is no service disruption.

What are the risks of hot tapping?

Issues rarely arise during hot taps but can include leaks and lost coupons.

N.S. Pawliuk works hard to prevent issues from occurring through manufacturer-centred employee training, adherence to proper procedures, and adherence to the AWWA's best practices.

Existing pipe condition is a major consideration when perform hot taps on any pipe. CCP is vulnerable to degradation over time, and certain pipe may not be suitable to hot tap. Contact us for more details. â€‹â€‹

Technical Expertise: Crews abide by AWWA M9 and manufacturer recommendations.

Experience: Our crews perform hot taps on concrete cylinder pipe regularly.

Key take-aways for Concrete Cylinder Pipe Hot Tapping:

  • Hot taps prevent the need for a system shut down when creating new outlets off of an existing pipe.

  • Hot tapping is faster than cutting in a tee.

  • No chlorination of the line is required, no lab reports to wait on and virtually no water is wasted.

  • N.S. Pawliuk abides by AWWA M9 and manufacturer recommendations to ensure the job goes smoothly.

This is a coupon from a hot tap we perform on CCP which shows a cross-section of the inner lining of the pipe. An outer layer of concrete as well as a steel spiral have been removed overtop of the pipe.
We use diamond abrasive cutters to drill into CCP. This ensures the clean and even cutting as seen in the coupon above.
